Indians outfielder Tyler Naquin will be placed on the injured list, according to manager Terry Francona.

Naquin has been dealing with a hairline fracture of a toe on his right foot. The IL stint can be backdated, meaning Naquin could only miss a few days. Daniel Johnson was placed on the Opening Day roster as additional depth with Naquin active but still dealing with the injury. Johnson took the place of Zach Plesac, who will start the Indians’ fifth game of the season.

With Naquin heading to the IL, Plesac could be added to the roster and work out with the team leading up to his start on Tuesday. Naquin is the second Indians outfielder on the IL, joining Delino DeShields. Neither is expected to miss much time.

“He went out earlier and they got him some orthotics and things like that. He’s just not to the point where he’s able to ... I think the pain is becoming more minute, or in a smaller area,” Francona said on a Zoom call. “But we visited with him this morning and we’re going to put him on the IL so we can back date it to the 22nd and he’ll be eligible to come off on the first.

“We’re probably just going to activate Plesac just because the numbers right now are — we’re at 30 players and we kinda felt he deserved to be on the team anyway. That will allow him to work out with us the next couple days leading up to his start.”
