The Tallmadge boys golf team finished fifth with a score of 345 at the 13-team Windmill Classic Thursday at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna.

Amherst Steele won the competition with a score of 316 and Mogadore (320), Beloit West Branch (333) and Rootstown (338) took the next three spots, respectively.

The Blue Devils’ Darin Hudak earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 71. He finished with 26 putts.

“Darin did not have his best ball-striking round, but his short game pulled him through,” Tallmadge head coach Jon Shomo said. “If you’re familiar with Windmill Lakes, you will recognize that 26 putts in 18 holes is quite an achievement. That's what the topnotch golfers do. They don't have their A game all the time, but they can often make it work in other ways.”

Rounding out the top four for the Blue Devils were Caleb Fairhurst (90), Christian Rutan (91) and Kasen Frisbee (93).

“As a team, the positive takeaway is that we started out significantly better than one year ago,” Shomo said. “Yes, we certainly can improve and look to do just that. We are definitely ahead of where we were as a program 12 months ago and can build on that as we hopefully move forward.

“We do feel fortunate to have the opportunity to compete in our sport right now. We are mindful that many of our student-athletes may not get the opportunity to do so.”

Tallmadge is scheduled to play its next match at the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy Invitational Monday at Glenmoor Country Club in Canton. Play is set to begin at 8 a.m.
