The Hudson and Akron Leagues of Women Voters condemn the recent threats of violence to Ohio Rep. Emilia Sykes and Ohio Sen. Vernon Sykes. These threats are outrageous, reprehensible and must not be tolerated.

While the League of Women Voters condemns all threats, of any kind, ones that are racially motivated need to be identified and dealt with swiftly and severely.

The LWV is an organization fully committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, in principle and in practice. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to the organization’s current and future success in engaging all individuals, households, communities, and policy makers in creating a more perfect democracy. We challenge all efforts and tactics that threaten our democracy and limit the ability of voters to exercise their right to vote.

This intimidation of two very respected legislators is deplorable and we applaud Gov. Mike DeWine, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, President of the Ohio Senate Larry Obhorf, Ohio Senator Kenny Yuko, and Ohio Representative Erica Crawley for speaking out. We all must work for the rights of all people to be active members of our democracy.
