Coronavirus: 21 people quarantined after contact with confirmed case from Stow high football, basketball programs

Twenty one contacts have been identified and asked to quarantine after an individual affiliated with the Stow-Munroe Falls Schools basketball and football team tested positive for the coronavirus last weekend.

Summit County Public Health spokeswoman Marlene Martin confirmed that 21 people met the criteria of being less than 6 feet from the person for more than 15 minutes. But Martin said she could not further identify whether the people were affiliated with the Stow sports teams or other non-school contacts of the patient.

Public health officials have declined to share information about COVID-19 positive patients or their contacts to protect their health privacy.

Health officials also have said they cannot say whether the patient is a coach or athlete.

The 21 people were contacted Tuesday after interviews with public health officials called contact tracing, or finding out what interactions the person had that would qualify for potential quarantining.

On Monday, Summit County Public Health Commissioner Donna Skoda said depending on the circumstances, a positive case with an association with a sports team did not mean the whole team would need to be quarantined.

The 21 people have been asked to quarantine for 14 days, Martin said.

The school district said on its Facebook page that it continues to work with the health department and anyone determined to have had close contact with the affected person would be contacted by the end of Tuesday by the health department.

Martin said the health department does not provide testing, nor does it require or recommend that quarantined contacts get tested, especially people without symptoms. However, if quarantined contacts have any coronavirus symptoms, they should contact their doctor to get tested, she said.
