Cuyahoga Falls Library will ask voters to renew its levy this fall
Board of Education passes first of two steps needed to put tax issue on Nov. 3 ballot
CUYAHOGA FALLS — The city’s library is planning to ask voters to renew a tax issue this fall.
The Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education on June 24 unanimously approved a resolution declaring it necessary to renew the Cuyahoga Falls Library’s 1.9-mill levy for five more years. This was the first of two steps the board must take to place the request on the Nov. 3 ballot. The tax issue helps pay for operational expenses of the library such as salaries, utilities, programming, and materials.
Laura Searle, the library’s fiscal officer, said the Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education has to put the levy on the ballot because the Cuyahoga Falls City School District is the library’s taxing authority.
Searle added the levy was approved in March 2016 and generates $1.374 million per year, which is 48 percent of the facility’s revenues.
The library will continue to receive property tax money on this levy through the end of 2021, according to Searle, who noted the levy would have to be renewed by the end of 2021 to ensure uninterrupted collection of funds.
City and Silver Lake residents who live in the Cuyahoga Falls City School District will have the opportunity to vote on this levy renewal request.
The Board of Education will vote on the second and final step to put the levy on the ballot at its July 15 meeting.
