Tenant being sought for Macedonia Steak ’n Shake site
Swensons not coming to city
MACEDONIA — A Swensons drive-in restaurant may not be coming to the city’s former Steak ’n Shake restaurant site, but there is hope that something may eventually occupy the now vacant Route 82 building.
Mayor Nick Molnar said Thursday that there is interest in the building, but he declined to say from who.
“Until we have something signed and delivered, I’m not going to bank on it anymore because of people backing out of the deals,” he said. “There are a bunch of interested parties in all of our open locations. Until it comes to fruition, I’m not really going to say anything because until it’s 100% done, there’s no point in talking about it.”
Plans to tear down the current 6,000-square-foot building and construct a Swensons were presented to the city’s planning commission this past November. Molnar, however, said the chain backed out early this year.
“There’s something with their business where they weren’t building any new buildings for some reason,” said Molnar. “So they had backed out of it because they were, I guess, taking a break from new restaurants going up. So that’s kind of the explanation I got from them.”
Kevin Howley, Swensons’ senior director of marketing, declined to comment on Friday.
“We only talk about restaurants that are under construction or restaurants that are open,” he said.
