Tallmadge resident Austin Pownall, a junior on the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy wrestling team, ended his stellar season at a Division I district tournament.
The competition concluded Saturday at Alliance High School.
Pownall finished fifth at 145 pounds. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the state tournament.
After finishing 1-1 the previous day, Pownall needed three consecutive wins to earn a ticket to Columbus.
He was one win short.
Pownall cruised to a 14-8 victory in his first consolation match and then won a hard-fought 3-2 decision in his second match.
However, Pownall lost a 4-1 decision in his next match to Max Kirby of Navarre Fairless. Pownall did end his season on a winning note with a dominating 11-0 major decision against Poland Seminary’s Jacob Caudle in the fifth-place match.
