Hudson resident Matthew Williams, a senior on the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy wrestling team, is heading to the Division II state wrestling tournament.
That became official after he finished second in the 132-pound weight division at a district competition, which concluded Saturday at Alliance High School.
After winning his first two matches Friday, Williams earned a 17-2 technical fall in his semifinal match before losing a 3-1 decision to Louisville’s Davin Rhoads in the title match.
"I'm not even concerned about the outcome of the match [against Rhoads]," Royals head coach Dave Bergan said. "It's the fifth time they've met this [season]. We all know those two can see each other again [this] week.
"He has jumped up a couple of levels, even this year. He has just improved so much."
Williams is scheduled to wrestle at the state tournament next Friday at Value City Arena in Columbus. The championship preliminaries are set to begin at 4:10 p.m.
"I can’t ask for a better way to test myself," Williams said. "I'm just excited and focused on what's coming up."
