Four Hudson wrestlers saw their seasons end at a Division I district tournament Saturday at Mentor High School.

Junior Gavin Wervey (145 pounds) and sophomore Aidan McStay (160) each finished sixth.

Wervey, who lost his opening match Friday, earned a pin in 2 minutes, 11 seconds, a 4-2 decision and a 9-0 major decision before he was eliminated in the consolation semifinals.

McStay, who won his first two matches Friday, lost both of his matches Saturday.

Senior heavyweight Garrett O’Connell and junior Brendan Demuynck (195) were eliminated from the competition in the consolation quarterfinals.

O’Connell, who lost his opening match Friday, started well on Saturday after picking up a pin (1:49) in his first match and then a 4-3 win in his second match.

However, O’Connell’s season ended after a heartbreaking 1-0 loss.

Demuynck, who finished 1-1 on Friday, earned a pin (1:46) in his first consolation match, but then lost a gut-wrenching 8-7 decision in his second match.

The top four wrestlers in each bracket advance to the state competition.

The Explorers finished 20th with 27 points. Hudson’s two Suburban League National Conference rivals, Brecksville-Broadview Heights and Wadsworth, shared the 39-team district championship with 233 points apiece. Highland finished a distant third with 110 points.
