Tallmadge sophomore swimmer Jack Markley qualified for the district competition in two events after his performance at the Akron Division sectional competition last Friday at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium.

Markley placed sixth in Akron and 18th overall in terms of the other sectional meets with a time of 58.55 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly. He also advanced in the 200 individual medley with a 13th-place clocking of 2:20.02 (24th overall).

Markley is scheduled to swim at the Northeast Ohio district meet Friday at Cleveland State University’s Busbey Natatorium. Swimming is set to begin at 3 p.m.

"Jack had a great meet," Blue Devils’ first-year head coach Kaela Long said. "He dropped time in both events. He likes to goof around and make his teammates laugh, but he has put in a ton of work this season and it shows."

Overall, the Blue Devils finished 17th out of 22 teams with 24 points.

Rocky River won the competition with 278 points. Aurora finished second with 248 points and Canfield placed third with 225 points.

"The boys’ performance was good," Long said. "They all dropped time and many of them swam the best they have this season. With only six boys, we were very limited in possible relay combinations and number of relays."

Markley wasn’t the only Tallmadge swimmer to earn an invitation to Cleveland.

Sophomore Nick Archer advanced with his 14th-place (26th overall) time of 1:02.85 in the 100 backstroke. He also finished 25th in the 50 freestyle with a clocking of 25.48.

"The 100 backstroke was Nick’s best event by far," Long said. "He had a great meet."

The Blue Devil girls finished 20th out of 24 teams with 21 points.

Copley won the competition with 294 points. Bay Village Bay finished second with 264 points and Akron Archbishop Hoban took third with 251 points.

"The girls did very well," Long said. "They were competitive in both individual events and in the relays."

Junior Hannah Fiume came very close to advancing after her 15th-place time of 1:17.74 in the 100 breaststroke. She also placed 17th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:33.25.

"I’m certain Hannah will get to districts next year and maybe even farther," Long said.

Senior Angelina Norris finished 16th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:11.89 and placed 23rd in the 200 freestyle with a clocking of 2:27.99.

"Angelina had a great final meet, dropping times in both events," Long said.

Also faring well for Tallmadge was sophomore Lauren Tan, who finished 19th in the 500 freestyle (6:57.09).
