The host Hudson wrestling team dropped to 4-1 on the season after losing to Suburban League National Conference rival North Royalton 37-27 Friday at Ray "Buck" Hyser Gymnasium.

The Explorers won six of their 14 matches.

"I was thinking we had a chance to split seven and seven," Hudson head coach Joe Caniglia said. "They have some very talented lightweights and are competitive throughout their lineup."

Brendan Demuynck improved to 21-6 on the season after earning a 6-2 decision at 195 pounds.

"It was a tall-and-lanky vs. shorter, stronger matchup," Caniglia said. "Sometimes those matches can go either way, but Brendan took control and stayed in good position to win. "

Gavin Wervey improved to 21-8 with an 8-3 decision at 145 pounds.

"Gavin avenged an early-season loss," Caniglia said. "He is becoming very consistent in his preparation and approach to competition. He is expecting more out of himself and it is paying off for him."

Freshman Noah Batcher scored a pin in 3 minutes, 17 seconds at 152 pounds. He finished with four takedowns to improve to 10-9.

"Noah has good mat awareness and very good balance," Caniglia said. "He was really good at taking the drills and techniques we had worked on this week into the match and they worked really well for him."

Heavyweight Garrett O'Connell continued his stellar season by earning a first-period pin with a headlock at the 1:23 mark. O’Connell improved to 20-5.

Will Davis improved to 14-12 with a pin in 2:36 at 138 pounds.

"Will secured a nice takedown and put a lot of pressure on his opponent to gain the pin," Caniglia said.

Sophomore Ian Krauss moved to 11-9 on the season with eight third-period points to earn a dramatic 11-9 victory at 182 pounds.

"Ian is improving every week and is gaining more confidence in himself," Caniglia said.

The Explorers are scheduled to compete at the Josh Hephner Memorial Tournament Jan. 24 (1 p.m.) and 25 (9 a.m. with the finals set for 6 p.m.) at Austintown-Fitch High School.
