In a battle for Portage County ice hockey supremacy, it was Kent Roosevelt that came out on top against Aurora for the second season in a row.
In what has become an annual battle of Portage County high school ice hockey, The Rough Riders edged the Greenmen 1-0 Saturday at The Pond Ice Rink in Chagrin Falls.
After a scoreless first period, Roosevelt forward Nick Krestan scored with five minutes left in the second period. Sam Stefanchik was credited with the assist.
Both teams played an evenly matched third period, but the Rough Riders stymied all of Aurora’s chances to secure the win.
Goaltender Nate Gray had 20 saves for Roosevelt, which improved to 10-14 overall. Nolan Sullivan made 31 saves in net for the Greenmen, which fell to 12-7 overall.
Although non-division rivals, the matchup between Aurora and Roosevelt has become a rivalry over the past three years with the Rough Riders earning bragging rights this season and a victory last season 5-0. The Greenmen topped the Rough Riders 4-2 in 2018.
