Starting later than most teams, the Hudson gymnastics squad may be a bit behind some of its rivals as the New Year approaches.

It’s a good bet the Explorers have only scratched the surface of their full potential. Nevertheless, they appear to be already in midseason form despite a longer hiatus than normal.

Hudson earned its second runner-up finish in three days at a four-team meet Monday at Strongsville High School.

The Explorers scored 137.7 points. Medina won the competition with 139.9 points. Also competing were Brunswick (135.4) and the host Mustangs (133.7).

Sydney DePompei led Hudson with a third-place all-around score of 35.1 points. She took third on the balance beam (9.1) and the floor exercise (9.05). DePompei also scored an 8.7 on vault.

Teammate Julia Petty captured first place on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.1. She also scored an 8.5 on vault.

Lindsey Havens took first for the Explorers, as well. She finished with a score of 9.05 on vault. Havens also posted a score of 8.7 on the floor exercise.

Others who fared well for Hudson were Alyssa Bezdek (8.6) and Ava Guistino (8.55), who competed on the floor exercise.
