The Harmon Middle School wrestling team has a 5-3 record thus far.

The team features 24 wrestlers, including 16 seventh-grade students. Wrestling at 80 and 86 pounds, respectively, are seventh-grade students Carter Sabatino, Will Bodine and Cole Munn along with eighth-grade student Ben Roth.

Seventh-grade students Kupa Maposa, David Potts, Mason Romancak and Gio Kaplan compete at 92 and 98 pounds, respectively.

Seventh-grade student Luke Manderbach wrestles at 104 pounds and eighth-grade students Tommy Ploskunak and Bryce Gibson and seventh-grade students Mason Terrano and Aydan Carlson wrestle at 110 pounds.

Seventh-grade student Cole Walton competes at 116 pounds and eighth-grade students Isaac Lee and Austin Grossman wrestle at 122 and 128 pounds, respectively.

Competing at 134 pounds are seventh-grade students Reid Acomb and Michael Wise. Seventh-grade students Corbin Kainrad and Ewan Dacres alternate at 142 and 150 pounds.

Eighth-grade students Justin Burick and Josh Thomas compete at 172 pounds and eighth-grade student Rocco Courtad and seventh-grade student Matthew Copley compete at 205 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.

Ploskunak and Lee are team captains. The team is led by coaches Paul Frankmann and Mike DeMay, who are both in their 17th year with the team. New on the coaching staff this season is Mark Bugara, a teacher at Harmon.

The team made its 2019-20 debut at the eight-team Jackson Duals. Put into a pool with Minerva, Austintown and Plain Township GlenOak, Harmon lost to eventual runner-up Minerva (45-32) and Austintown (46-36). Harmon’s lone win took place against GlenOak (56-30). Harmon then faced Hudson, the third-place finisher from the opposite pool, and won 54-42.

This event enabled all of Harmon’s wrestlers to get matches. Earning pins for Harmon were Terrano, Gibson, Sabatino, Roth, Manderbach, Walton, Grossman, Dacres, Munn, Bodine, Copley and Courtad.

Other Harmon victories came from Potts, Kaplan, Ploskunak and Kainrad. Ploskunak and Gibson were named wrestlers of the week.

On Dec. 11, Harmon hosted Kent, Cuyahoga Falls and Hudson for the first Suburban League double dual of the season.

Harmon cruised past Kent (68-15) and Cuyahoga Falls (54-33). The match with Hudson was not scored.

Burick, competing in his first match ever, earned a pin at 172 pounds. Also scoring pins were Munn, Roth, Kaplan, Ploskunak, Walton, Gibson, Courtad, Romancak, Maposa, Acomb and Copley. Other wins came from Bodine, Manderbach, Grossman and Kainrad. Acomb and Kainrad were named wrestlers of the week.

Harmon traveled to Hudson Dec. 18 and defeated Tallmadge (53-42) and lost to Stow (50-33).

Earning pins for Harmon were Manderbach, Ploskunak, Walton, Grossman, Courtad and Sabatino. Other wins came from Romancak, Carlson, Sabatino, Bodine, Kaplan and Gibson.

Bodine, who moved up to 86 pounds since two of his teammates were ill, and Manderbach were named wrestlers of the week.

Manderbach, Ploskunak, Walton and Grossman lead the team in takedowns. Kainrad, Acomb, and Ploskunak lead Harmon in escapes.

Kaplan leads Harmon in reversals and Manderbach leads the team in near falls. Courtad has the most pins (seven) followed by Grossman, Walton and Manderbach with five apiece.

Walton, Grossman and Courtad have yet to lose a match thus far.
