The Western Reserve Academy girls basketball team earned a hard-fought victory to end a two-game losing streak Friday.

The host Pioneers edged North Ridgeville Lake Ridge Academy 41-36. A breakaway layup by Jai DuVal in the fourth quarter gave Reserve the lead for good. She also made a pair of clutch free throws to seal the win. DuVal led WRA (5-2) with a game-high 20 points.

"It was a team defensive effort," Pioneers head coach Emily Thews-Baldridge said. "Jill Reef had some big steals and deflections in the fourth quarter. Josie [Spano] also had some big deflections underneath.

"Megan [Hovan], Julia [Clarke] and Ella [Siegenthaler] all worked hard to shut down their tall center, freshman Carter McCray. Olivia Turk also contributed defensively and had a big block at the 3-point line in the second quarter."

McCray scored 12 points for the Lions.
