The Western Reserve Academy girls basketball team is off to its best start in recent memory.

The Pioneers improved to 4-0 after earning a 46-34 victory over Hawken Wednesday in Gates Mills.

Like it has been throughout the early stages of the season, Reserve’s defense was formidable.

"We played a mix of man-to-man and 2-3 [zone]," WRA head coach Emily Thews-Baldridge said. "Once again, a team effort on defense set the tone. We held off a late-game surge to seal the win."

The Hawks scored 14 points in the fourth quarter after the Pioneers outscored Hawken 19-7 in the third period to take a 36-20 lead.

Halle Davis scored a game-high 22 points to lead Reserve. She also made four 3-pointers.

Jai DuVal added 15 points for WRA.
