It’s a new year, but the Woodridge boys bowling team opened the 2019-20 season in a familiar position: Atop the Portage Trail Conference.

The Bulldogs opened the season by winning the PTC Preseason Tournament Saturday at Spins Bowl in Akron with 4,204 pins. Woodridge held off Cloverleaf (4,167 pins) and Springfield (4,073)  to win the title. 

The preseason tournament also marked the return of the Woodridge girls team. The Bulldog girls finished seventh in the 11-team tournament with 3,012 pins. Garfield won the girls team title with 3,503 pins.

The Woodridge boys dominated the individual leader board. Bryce Oliver won the boys individual title with a three-game series score of 722, while teammate Angelo Biondo was right behind, taking second with 716 pins. The two Bulldogs were the lone players to break 700.

Woodridge also had Chad Schoolcraft finish fourth in the individual race with a 640 series. The Bulldogs also got a 551 series from Connor Jewell, a two-game score of 354 from Aiden Jewell and a game of 170 from Malcolm Neitenbach.

Woodridge looked to have a comfortable lead heading into the Baker games, as it led 3,15-2940 over Cloverleaf.

However, the Bulldogs struggled a bit with a six-game Baker series score of 1,051 (209-162-190-171-154-165), compared to a series score of 1,227 (169-256-181-224-195-202) for the Colts.

In the girls individual race, Woodridge had a top five finisher, as sophomore Breauna Neal finished in fifth-place with a 563 series.

Woodridge also a 464 series from Abby Bergorf, a 413 series from Kara Laughman, a 406 series from Kat Cserhati, a two-game score of 239 from McKenzie Nye and a game of 93 from Liz Fletcher.

Following the tournament, the Woodridge girls won their opening match of the season, defeating Southeast 1,951-1,855 at Spins Bowl in Kent.

Neal again led the Bulldogs with a two-game series score of 371 (224-147), followed Bergdorf with a 357 (177-180), Laughlan with a 266 (155-111) Nye with a 259 (119-140) and Cserhati with a 248 (134-114).

Woodridge was set to take on Akron Garfield on its home lanes at Legend Lanes Friday, followed by the Ravenna Raves Bowling Invitational Saturday at Spins Bowl Kent.

The Bulldogs will host Lake Center Christian Monday at 4 p.m.
