It’s not out of the ordinary to see a Northeast Ohio Field Hockey League team reach the state final.

Last year was no exception as Hudson advanced to the title match.

A major reason for the Explorers’ 2019 run was their dominance in the NEOFHL. They finished 12-0 last season and had not lost a league match in more than two years.

Until Tuesday.

Hudson’s 26-match league winning streak came to a heartbreaking end after losing to host Shaker Heights 2-0.

Lily Camp and Lori Clarke scored for the Red Raiders, who lost to the Explorers twice last season, including the Hawken district final in Gates Mills.

Shaker, which led 1-0 at halftime, had a 13-9 advantage in penalty corners and an 18-8 edge in shots on goal.

Hudson goaltender Sadie Mrakuzic finished with 12 saves. Red Raiders’ goalie Athena Vadnal stopped seven shots.

The Explorers’ last league loss was a 1-0 defeat to Toledo Maumee Valley Country Day, which took place Sept. 16, 2017, at Hudson Memorial Stadium.
