Two members of the Hudson girls tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals in Division I sectional play Tuesday at the Solon Community Tennis Courts.

They are Laura Nijhuis and Sunny Fan, who played first and second singles, respectively, for the Explorers throughout the season.

The second-seeded Nijhuis received a bye in the opening round. She defeated Warren Howland’s Gina Lussier (6-3, 6-1) and Chardon’s Lucy McNees (6-0, 6-0) in Bracket C.

Nijhuis is scheduled to play Willoughby South’s Loren Jevnikar in her quarterfinal match.

Fan earned wins over Shaker Heights’ Kayla Lowery (6-0, 6-0), Aurora’s Juliana Malinowski (6-2, 6-0) and Howland’s Francesca Ellsco (6-0, 6-4) in Bracket B.

Fan is set to play Solon’s Eliana Chelnick in her quarterfinal match.

Sectional play is scheduled to continue today at Mayfield Village Racquet Club. Play is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Emma Hall lost her first match in singles’ play. She was defeated by Aurora’s Dottie Horvat 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in Bracket A.

Hudson also had two doubles teams participate.

The duo of Jennifer Grainger and Abby Schurman posted a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Chardon’s Kaylie Malloy and Abby Atchley in their first match in Bracket C. However, they lost to Bainbridge Township Kenston’s Kelsi Currington and Lily Peelman 6-2, 6-3 in their second match.

The team of Samantha Sigler and Emi Uijtewaal earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Aurora’s Quincy Bizjak and Olivia French in their first match and lost to Shaker’s Cailtin Bocks and Natalie Glinzler 6-2, 6-1 in their second match in Bracket B.
