The Hudson girls cross country team won the 19-team Strongsville Vertical Runner Cross Country Invitational Saturday.

The Explorers scored 103 points. Olentangy Liberty finished second with 134 points and Perrysburg took third with 137 points.

Strongsville’s Julia Isham won the 152-member race with a time of 18 minutes, 34.84 seconds. Emmaline Hannan led the Explorers with an eighth-place clocking of 19:43.57.

Sarah Weldon was next for Hudson in 12th (19:55.39) and teammate Sydney Gallagher placed 19th (20:12.52).

Rounding out the top five for the Explorers were Jordyn Hopgood (27th, 20:42.79) and Brenna Beucler (36th, 20:56.41).

"While we did not have our best team performance of the year in the varsity race, we had many individual highlights which allowed us to win," Hudson head coach Megan Petraska said. "Emma Hannan ran a season-best time to lead us and Sydney Gallagher, Jordyn Hopgood and Sarah Weldon ran faster times this year than last year, which indicates we are progressing.

"Progress from last year and from week to week is our main goal at this point in the season as we continue to run on heavy legs given the volume of mileage and workouts we are completing weekly.

"In the open race, Nicole Jurado really raced aggressively and Grace Thorpe continues to impress. Amy Fulton continues to progress for us as does Kate Koennecke, Blake Wervey, Natalie Brown, Zoe Kippley, Emma Rygh and Subi Simmons, who just returned to our lineup last week after an ankle injury in the preseason.

"Other great races were turned in by Grace Kempf, Becca Stitzel, Jordyn Farley, who returned from an injury, Josie Cartella, Jordan Seiple, Ellie Finkenthal, Kate Orazen, Katie Schurman, Malia Lewis, Ella Fagan and Ella Spaulding."
