When Nordonia’s game at Mayfield was suspended Friday night due to lightning, the Knights were looking a rout in the face, as they trailed 27-0 at the time of the suspension.
Using the 21-hour delay to their benefit, Nordonia would run off 23 straight points, only to have Mayfield pull away to score a 43-23 win Saturday. Nordonia dropped to 2-1 with the loss.
Three touchdown passes from Knights quarterback Billy Levak and a 30-yard field goal from Andrew Lastovka accounted for the rally. Levak hit wide receiver Joel Jones with a 94-yard touchdown pas with 4:30 left in the third quarter, which cut Mayfield’s lead to 27-23.
However, Mayfield would answer with a 12-yard touchdown run from Michael Huss to push the lead back to 34-27 and the Knights would get no closer. Nordonia’s final three drives would end with a safety and two interceptions.
Nordonia will open Suburban League National Conference play at Twinsburg next Friday at 7 p.m.
