The Tallmadge Marlins won the Akron Metropolitan Swim Association championship July 13 at the University of Akron’s Oliver Ocasek Natatorium.
The Marlins, who finished 6-1 during the regular season, joined the AMSA league last year.
"This is my 19th year with the Marlins and I’m extremely proud of this team for working as hard as they did all season," Marlins head coach Aaron Balazs said. "To win a championship in a new league was awesome."
Balazs’ assistant coaches were Marissa Bowers, Jacob DiFiore, Emily Jarvie, Mackenzie Long, Ryan Miller and Joe Sincel.
Not only did the Marlins have a successful meet record, but they also set 42 new team records.
Setting records for the Marlins this season are as follows.
• Age 6 and younger: Lillian LaPlant and Gail Turney
• 9-10: Sarah Aguirre, Brynn Bird, Billy Burch, Carson May, Kadin Pyka, Madi Thompson and Reed Turney
• 11-12: Jack Green and Rachel Tan
• 13-14: Lincoln May
• 15-18: Marissa Bowers and Audrey Ruscak
Bowers recently was named the team’s head coach for the 2020 season.
"I am really thrilled for the swimmers because they practice every morning for six weeks of their summer," she said. "They all try so hard and are more than deserving of the championship. I am beyond excited to become their head coach."
The Marlins are scheduled to make an appearance at the Tallmadge Circle Festival Aug. 17. Registration for next year’s season will begin in the spring of 2020.
