What a difference a year makes.

In 2018, the Hudson Explorers Aquatic Team finished as the runner-up at the annual Lake Erie Age Group Short Course Championships.

It was a historic finish for the team, which had never cracked the top two in the past.

This year, HEAT swimmers dominated the three-day competition, which took place at Cleveland State University’s Robert F. Busbey Natatorium March 8-10.

The HEAT not only won the overall team championship, it also won the girls’ competition, the boys’ competition and the age-group crowns for 10-years-and-younger girls and boys as well as 13-14-year-old girls and boys.

"So proud of our swimmers for all their hard work and dedication over the years to make this dream a reality," HEAT head coach Matt Davis said. "What a great swim family and community to be a part of."

Leading the charge were two swimmers who earned high point honors for their age group.

Alex Cimera, 14, won top honors in the 13-14-year-old boys’ division. Cimera scored 159 points on his way to the title, including first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races, 400 individual medley and 100 butterfly.

Gigi Falke, 10, took home the high-point award for the 10-year-old-and-younger girls. Falke scored 147 points during the competition, including a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly and runner-up finishes in five individual events.

"I am so proud of each and every swimmer for their hard work to achieve their personal goals, overcome struggles, and fight together as a team to do what we did this weekend," age group head coach Erin Crabtree said. "This is a big deal."

Overall, the team boasted 14 individual event champions and seven relay winners. Three HEAT swimmers, Mia Dezelic, Alex Gallagher and Marisa Schenkenberger, earned times that qualified them for HEAT’s national-level team.

And, to top it off, HEAT members smashed nearly a dozen team, meet and district records along the way.

The following HEAT swimmers earned top-10 finishes in individual events and top-5 finishes in relays:
