The Hudson ice hockey team split two games with Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Red North East Division rival Cleveland Heights during the regular season.
There was no doubt which team was superior in the rubber match.
The fifth-seeded Explorers earned a date in the Baron Cup Tournament semifinals after posting a convincing 4-0 victory over the fourth-seeded Tigers.
The contest took place Wednesday at the John M. Coyne Center in Brooklyn. With the win, Hudson (15-12-2) is scheduled to play top-seeded Mentor (26-4-2) in a semifinal matchup Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
The Cardinals, who did not allow a goal in their three wins against the Explorers during the regular season, advanced with a 7-4 victory over North Olmsted.
Against Cleveland Heights, Hudson goaltender Will Hannon stopped all 24 shots.
The Explorers led 2-0 after two periods. Brady Ludewig found the net twice to lead Hudson. One of his goals took place on a power play.
Matt Hannon and Burke Villenauve also scored one goal apiece and Luke Karnofel contributed two assists. Alec Dickens and Blake Lori each had one assist for the Explorers.
Hudson received the ninth seed at the Kent district tournament. The Explorers are set to play 10th-seeded Kent Roosevelt in the opening round Monday at Kent State University Ice Arena. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
Gates Mills GIlmour Academy got the top seed and Shaker Heights, Hunting Valley University and Mentor earned the second, third and fourth seeds, respectively.
