The Hudson gymnastics team had its best performance of the season last Saturday in Cincinnati.

The Explorers couldn’t quite duplicate their efforts on Wednesday.

But it was another gargantuan step in the right direction.

Hudson concluded its regular season with its fifth win after placing first at an eight-team meet at West Geauga High School in Chesterland.

The Explorers reached the 140-point mark for the second consecutive meet after scoring 140.4 points. Bainbridge Township Kenston finished second with 134.85 points and Chardon Notre Cathedral Latin took third with 131.25 points.

"This was a great last meet to finish out the regular season," Hudson head coach Megan Mertz said. "The girls are feeling confident and excited heading into sectionals next weekend."

Not surprisingly, the Explorers’ dynamic duo of juniors led the way.

Sydney DePompei and Julia Petty shared the all-around title with the Bombers’ Victoria Hammerle as all three gymnasts scored 35.05 points.

DePompei captured first on the balance beam with a score of 9.2 and the floor exercise with a score of 9.1.

She also finished in a fifth-place tie with 8.5 points on vault and placed 10th on the uneven parallel bars (8.25).

Petty was the vault champion (8.85) and the bars’ top performer (8.9). She also finished in a 10th-place tie on the beam (8.8).

Sophomore Samantha Sigler had a stellar meet for Hudson as well.

She captured sixth in the all-around standings with a score of 34.7. She was the runner-up on the bars (8.65) and she took third on the floor (8.95). Sigler also finished fourth on vault (8.6).

Senior Lina Ikhlef placed eighth in the all-around competition (33.8). She was the runner-up on the beam (9.1) and finished eighth on the floor (8.7) and ninth on vault (8.2).

Also faring well for the Explorers were sophomore Alyssa Bezdek, who finished in a tie for fifth on the bars (8.45), sixth on the floor (8.8) and seventh on the beam (8.9); freshman Laurel Gomersal, who placed seventh on the bars (8.4) and eighth on vault (8.35); and senior Makayla Hudy, who finished fifth on the floor (8.85).

Hudson is scheduled to compete in a sectional meet Feb. 17 at West Geauga. The meet is set to begin at 10 a.m.
