Hudson graduate Andrew McDonald, 19, and his team recently competed against the top 10 US Junior Curling teams in the 2019 age-21-and-younger Junior National Championship Jan. 14-19 in Two Harbors, Minnesota.
The team earned the bronze medal after finishing 6-1 in the round-robin competition. McDonald, who is now a freshman at Michigan State University, was recognized as the recipient of the Katie Beck Memorial Award for "demonstrating characteristics shown by Katie Beck."
Beck was the Junior National Champion in 2002 and 2003 and World Junior Gold Medalist in 2002. The award includes coachability, good sportsmanship, positive attitude and commitment to competitive junior curling.
McDonald’s team, which is known as Team Strouse, also was awarded the USA Curling High Performance Program's Discretionary Junior Bid to compete at the 2019 Men's National Championships, which is scheduled to take place Feb. 9-16 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Team Strouse is set to take on the 2018 gold medalist, Team Schuster, in its first match.
