The Hudson gymnastics team fell agonizingly short of reaching the state competition last winter.
If the Explorers put up the same score they did Saturday in Cincinnati, they won’t be denied this season.
In fact, a performance like this could make them a major player in the race for the state championship.
Hudson captured the 15-team Win the Day Invitational with a season-high 143.15 points at Anderson High School.
The Explorers, who did not reach 140 points in any of their previous meets this winter, had their best performance by far as the postseason draws near.
"This was such a good boost of confidence for the girls with sectionals being two weeks away," Hudson head coach Megan Mertz said. "The girls had a one-two-three sweep on floor while breaking meet records."
The Explorers dazzled on the floor exercise.
Sydney DePompei led the way with a first-place score of 9.6 and Lina Ikhlef captured second with a 9.5.
Julia Petty, Hudson’s lone state qualifier in 2018, took third with a 9.35. She also placed first on the balance beam (9.2) and the uneven parallel bars (9.1) and fifth on vault (8.8) en route to capturing the all-around title (36.45).
DePompei continued her impressive season by taking second in the all-around competition (35.55). She accumulated that score by finishing third on vault (8.9) and sixth on the bars (8.65).
Alyssa Bezdek had her highest finish of the season on the beam with a second-place score of 9.05. She also captured 10th on the bars (8.4). Ikhlef added an eighth-place score of 8.7 on vault.
Also faring well for the Explorers were Laurel Gomersal, who placed fifth on the beam (8.9) and and seventh on vault (8.75), Abby Young, who finished sixth on the beam (8.75) and ninth on the floor (9) and Sam Sigler (ninth on the bars, 8.5).
