The Hudson Rugby Club girls varsity, boys varsity and junior varsity teams combined with the Walsh Jesuit rugby teams competed in the Carolina Ruggerfest earlier this month in Matthews, N.C.
This tournament has grown into one of the largest high school rugby tournaments in the country with 77 high school teams with more than 1,700 players competing in six divisions. Overall, the teams finished 6-3.
The Hudson girls kicked off first with a strong 15-5 win over Fort Hunt Gators, from Virginia. Both the boys varsity and JV squads played Legion (Va.) and lost their games by the same score: 27-5.
The Hudson girls’ next match was a convincing 37-5 victory over Myers Park Mustangs (N.C.). The boys varsity bounced back to beat Bearden, Tenn., 10-5. The boys JV brought home a 24-5 win over East Cobb (Ga.).
The boys JV team also posted a 20-0 victory over Charlotte Catholic. This victory secured second place in the JV division for the Hudson Boys. The boys varsity team defeated Archbishop Spalding (Md.) 20-10 to claim second place in the varsity division.
The final match of the weekend featured the Hudson girls in a division final against a developing rival in Warsaw (Ind.). It was a hard, fought match, but Warsaw earned a 20-12 win.
This was the 14th appearance by the Hudson Rugby program in the NC Ruggerfest.
