Harmon School's wrestling squad has continued to be competitive through December, and also is having some success in January. In dual matches, the team stands 7-7.Despite forfeiting at 116, 128, 172 and 245 pounds, the team has managed to cover the difference in most matches, according to coach Paul Frankmann."We performed beyond our numbers at the 10-team Tallmadge Invitational Dec. 15," he said, adding the Greenmen placed fourth.On Dec. 4, the team traveled to West Geauga for a triangular which also included Berkshire. Harmon defeated the Badgers 50-22 before falling to a huge Wolverine squad 52-30.Justin Frankmann wrestled up at 86 pounds in his first appearance in the starting lineup. Miles Milner and Tim Maxwell shared the 98 and 104 classes, both wrestling one match at each weight and producing commendable efforts.Deontae Simmons, Bobby Angelo and Chris Friedler won extra matches.On Dec. 13, the team defeated Chagrin Falls 48-26 before being crushed by Kenston, which Frankmann said arguably is the strongest middle school team Harmon has ever faced.Key wins against Chagrin came from Robert Graham, Simmons, Julio Smith, Lee Elliott and Maceo Ellington. The only win Harmon earned against Kenston was D.J. Lieberth's pin at 80 pounds.The most heroic battles came from Justin Morrison, who lost twice 18-9 and 18-14. "He never stopped moving and working throughout," Frankmann said.ANTHONY VELLA and Frankmann won extra matches against Kenston opponents.In the Tallmadge Invitational, the top three places went to the full squads of Kent, Streetsboro and Woodridge, but Harmon's 12 wrestlers earned 103 team points and produced seven place winners.Lieberth and Milner were champions at 80 and 98 pounds. Simmons finished second at 92 pounds. Third place finishes went to Morrison at 122 and Smith at 142. Devin Levan and Greg Biben were fourth at 110 and 205.On Dec. 20, the team hosted its first home event with a triangular against Cuyahoga Heights and Berkshire. Harmon was edged by Cuyahoga Heights 42-38 and beat Berkshire 56-21.Frankmann and Lieberth each won matches at 80. Milner, Levan, Morrison, Elliott and Smith won twice. Graham, Rinehart, Maxwell and Biben each won once.Bobby Angelo made his debut at 116 and wrestled his Berkshire opponent into the third period. Dan Wood, Simmons and Nate Lucenti also wrestled well.Results since holidaysLast week, Harmon defeated Chagrin Falls 57-21 and Independence 60-18."It was probably our best team performance of the season in terms of moves executed," said Frankmann.Frankmann, Lieberth and Rinehart each won twice with pins. Smith had a pin and forfeit, Nowak and James Penny picked up two forfeits, and Elliott, Maxwell, Morrison, Angelo, Ellington and Dylan Sprague had one forfeit each.Harmon wrestled four dual matches at the Perry Super Quad without Frankmann and Penny, who were ill, and Levan, who was out of town.Harmon lost to Geneva 48-29, West Geauga 69-24 and Perry 68-11 and beat Berkshire 41-30.Lieberth, Rinehart, Milner, Morrison, Smith and Elliott won against Geneva and Graham and Nowak lost close matches.Rinehart, Milner, Maxwell and Morrison won against West Geauga, while against Berkshire, Liebeth pinned at 80 pounds and other wins were by Rinehart, Maxwell, Morrison, Smith, Elliott and Biben.Against Perry, Lieberth won by forfeit and Simmons and Morrison also won, while in extra matches, Simmons pinned a foe and Friedler, Anthony Vella and William Poppe showed great improvement, according to the coach.Wrestlers of the week so far this season have been Milner, Lieberth, Smith, Morrison, Simmons, Elliott, Maxwell, Frankmann, Spague and Angelo. Heading into the new year, Harmon had one undefeated wrestler -- Lieberth (10-0). Others with winning records were Frankmann, Cody Rinhart, Simmons, Milner, Levan, Morrison, Smith and Biben. Upcoming matches are today (Jan. 23) at Twinsburg (also Solon), Jan. 24 at Richmond Heights (also Orange), Jan. 26 at the Harmon Invitational and Feb. 2 at the Twinsburg Invitational.
