Aurora's U11 baseball tournament team captured the championship at the Columbus Cobra Classic on June 16 and 17 at Berliner Park. Six teams participated.The locals went 4-1, beating the Urbana Dragons 10-1, Mad River Mustangs 15-9, Medina Sting 11-7 and the Dragons again 8-3, while losing to the Xenia Bucs 9-8 in an extra-inning shootout format.According to coach Ray Nowak, pitching was handled by Sam Nowak, Joe Roberto, Anthony Quaranto, Andrew Rinicella, George Bollas and Alex Avalon."Offensively, everyone got at least 2 hits and scored at least one run and drove in at least one," said Nowak.Bollas managed 6 hits, 6 runs and 5 RBIs, Matt Iammarino had a homer, 5 hits, 8 runs and 5 RBIs, Nowak 6 hits, 5 runs and 7 RBIs, Quaranto 6 hits, 4 runs and 8 RBIs, Steve Virost, 5 hits, 4 runs and 5 RBIs, Rinicella 3 hits, 6 runs and 5 RBIs and Roberto 3 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBIs.Other offensive contributors were Avalon, Drew Daff, Griffin Dougherty, Prayag Jina and Andrew Petersen."Kudos to the catchers [Dougherty, Petersen and Avalon ], who split up the duties on the hot weekend," said Nowak. "Sunday was particularly difficult with three games in 90-degree heat."The coaches were happy we got strong contributions from all 12 players. The team played strong defense most of the tournament, especially in the championship game."The pitchers also split up the load well. Lastly, it was a hot day and they weathered it well and came through when it counted. It was a good team victory."In addition to Nowak, coaches are Lou Virost, Bob Petersen and Rob Quaranto.
