by Frank AcetoAssociate Sports EditorConsidering its fourth-place finish during the regular season, it would be easy to think the Cuyahoga Falls boys track and field team's sixth-place finish at the Western Reserve Conference Meet was a disappointment. Not so, says Black Tigers veteran head coach Rick Lieberman.Falls scored 75 points at the eight-team WRC Meet, which concluded May 10 at Stow-Munroe Falls High School.Solon won the competition with 119 points, while Twinsburg (108) and Hudson (93.5) placed second and third, respectively. The Black Tigers set two conference records and one school record during the meet. Falls' downfall was its performance in the field events, but the Black Tiger runners certainly made a lasting impression."We just wanted to get ready for the district meet and get out as healthy as we can," Lieberman said. "We figured we were going to finish in the top three or the top six anyway. We did not perform well in the field events."Leading the way for Falls was Rob Jones, who scored 22.5 points. He set a conference record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.4 seconds. The previous record of 38.5 was by Twinsburg's Chase Petzinger in 2006.Rob Jones also joined Mike Dugger, Jake Hall and Christian Fossett on the winning 400 relay team. That quartet posted a conference-record time of 42.7, which broke the 2002 Falls' team's record of 43.13. Rob Jones also won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.5."Rob has one of the top times in the area and in the state in the 300 hurdles," Lieberman said. "The 400 relay ran a time below 43 seconds for the first time. We feel really good going into districts."The 800 relay team of Chrisean Fossett, Mike Dugger, Jake Hall and Christian Fossett finished second with a school-record time of 1:31.The following Black Tigers also placed in their events:3,200-meter relay: Bryce Pulley, Danny Stuart, Nate Slaughter and Chrisean Fossett, fourth, 8 minutes, 13.4 seconds (season-best and know we can go faster and expect to faster at districts)1,600 relay: Stuart, Chris Schirra, Alex Jones and Chrisean Fossett, seventh, 3:34.61,600: Nate Slaughter, fourth, personal-record 4:27; and Mike Baxter, eighth, 4:35.3 personal-best400: Chrisean Fossett, sixth, 52.1800: Pulley, sixth, personal-best 2:01.8 personal best200: Dugger, third, season-best 22.63,200: Slaughter, third, 9:56.9; and Baxter, sixth, 10:01.4Long jump: Corbin Sweat, seventh, 18 feet, 9 inchesShot put: Ben Ohler, eighth, 45 feet"I was really impressed with the performance of our sprinters," Lieberman said. "We're certainly capable of performing better in the field events. We've shown flashes, but we've lacked consistency."Falls is scheduled to compete at a Division I district meet, which is scheduled to conclude May 18 at Ravenna Stadium. Finals results were not available at press time. The 3,200 relay team of Pulley, Stuart, Slaughter and Chrisean Fossett won with a time of 8:12.85.Vinnie Cox also placed eighth in the shot put (44-3). The top four performers and top four relay teams advance to regionals, which are set to take place May 23 and 25 at Austintown Fitch High School. The action is slated to begin at 4 p.m. both days."We hope to get five to eight guys to regionals," Lieberman said.E-mail: faceto@recordpub.comPhone: 330-686-3914
