by Dean RaymondCorrespondentStow --After a slow start, the host Stow-Munroe Falls Lady Bulldogs got things together and defeated Nordonia, 50-26 Jan. 20 in Western Reserve Conference girls high school basketball action.Stow (13-2, 9-1 in the WRC) did not score until 3:16 remaining in the first quarter as a three-point goal from senior guard Liana Jennings put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 3-2.However, thanks to six points from sophomore guard Mariah White, the Lady Knights (4-10, 1-9) led 6-5 after eight minutes of play.Bulldogs coach Bob Podges attributed his teams slow start to academic reasons. "It was exam week and my kids were tired," Podges said. "Liana (Jennings) penetrated well and had some nice assists. We didn't shoot the ball well or play good defense."Stow would open the second quarter on a 9-0 run, including four points from Jennings, and led 14-6 with 3:40 left in the second period when senior forward Alyssa Wagers banked home an inside hook shot. After a three-point play from Nordonia senior guard/forward Beth Andrasik, the Lady Bulldogs scored the next seven points, including a triple from junior guard Emilee Ritchie and led 21-9 at the half. The Lady Knights scored the first point of the third quarter before an 8-0 run by Stow, including three points each from Ritchie and Jennings, made the score 29-10 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs with 5:06 to go in the third period. The closest Nordonia got the rest of the way came at 29-14 when Andrasik sank back-to-back five-foot jumpers, the last one coming with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter.Once again, Stow went on another run, this time a 10-10 spurt (four points from junior post Shelby Burkhart) and led 39-14 after three as Ritchie tripled again (her fourth and final trifecta on the afternoon) with 7 seconds left in the third period. The Lady Knights did manage to score the first four points in the fourth quarter on a five-foot jumper by Andrasik and an 18-foot jumper from junior guard Alyssa DiOrio with 6:40 remaining in the game but it was a little too late to make a serious run at the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Knights were just 12-of-56 from the floor for 21 percent and canned 2-of-3 free throws for 67 percent.Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs swished home only 19-of-64 field goal attempts for 30 percent and converted on 6-of-13 charity tosses for 46 percent, including 4-of-6 in the third period.White led Nordonia with 10 points while Andrasik added nine tallies with six coming in the second half.Jennings scored a game-high 20 points for Stow, including 11 in the first half while Ritchie contributed 12 points on four trifecta's (the Maroon and Gold had six three-point goals in the contest to none for the visitors). The Lady Bulldogs swept the season series from the Lady Knights as they also won at Nordonia, 74-47 on Dec. 13.E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.comPhone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3113
