by Dean RaymondCorrespondentStow -- Stow-Munroe Falls ran their winning streak to four with a 74-34 victory over Cuyahoga Falls at home Wednesday evening in Western Reserve Conference girls high school basketball action.The game was competitive in the first half before the Lady Bulldogs (12-2, 8-1) outscored the Lady Black Tigers (3-10, 1-8) 14-2 in the third quarter to pull away."We played well in the first half, but Stow shot the lights out [15-of-25 in the opening half]," Black Tigers coach Dennis Wright said. "I can't fault our effort but [Stow] have a lot of weapons. Everybody gave a good effort for us, though."Meanwhile, Lady Bulldogs coach Bob Podges agreed with Wright. "We shot the ball very well tonight," Podges said. "[Falls] made some shots, too. I thought our defense was good, but sometimes you can only do so much. We changed our defense a little in the second half and that made a difference. Twelve different players scored for us tonight which was nice."Cuyahoga Falls last led in the contest at 6-5 when senior guard Rachel Davis scored off a reverse layup with 5:41 remaining in the first quarter.However, five points from senior guard Liana Jennings and a triple by senior guard Bri Dishong with 47 seconds left in the first period helped Stow take an 18-9 lead. The Maroon and Gold eventually led 18-11 after eight minutes of play.Lady Bulldog junior guard Emilee Ritchie and Lady Black Tiger junior forward/center Lauren Reed exchanged three-point goals to start the second quarter before Stow senior guard Cate Cianchetti capped a 6-0 run by the Maroon and Gold with a layup as the home team led 27-14 with 5:53 to go in the second quarter.The Lady Bulldogs increased their advantage to 14 at 31-17 when Jennings converted a layup with 3:13 remaining before halftime before Falls got as close as nine at 31-22 and 32-23 on a basket from junior guard Amanda Colotto and a free throw by senior forward Jaki Patterson, respectively.Stow then scored the final nine points of the second period in the last 1:24, including six more points from Jennings, as the Maroon and Gold led 41-23 at the break.The 9-0 run by the Lady Bulldogs turned into a 22-0 run by Stow as they scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to lead 54-23 at the 3:29 mark when Jennings sank a 15-foot jumper.The Maroon and Gold led 55-25 after three.A layup by sophomore forward Kelsey MacWherter put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 66-27 with a nice assist to Dishong at the 4:25 mark in the fourth period before Falls scored the next seven points, including a three-point goal by Davis with 3:03 left as the visitors eventually trailed 66-34 with 2:32 to go in the game.The Lady Black Tigers were 12-of-42 from the field for 29 percent, including 4-of-8 in the first quarter and sank 6-of-10 free throws for 60 percent.Stow swished home 25-of-49 field goal attempts for an impressive 51 percent and canned 17-of-23 charity tosses for a solid 74 percent.Patterson led Falls with eight points, while Jennings scored a game-high 20 points for the Lady Bulldogs,Cianchetti added 15 points for Stow, including nine in the opening half while Ritchie poured in 10 points with six coming in the first half for the Maroon and Gold.E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.comPhone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3113
