Bernard E. "Bernie" Rickelman
Aurora - Bernard E. "Bernie" Rickelman, age 95. Beloved husband of 70 years to Doris (nee Branco); loving father to Barbara (Karl) Warnke, Kathy (Dan) Beck, Laura (Mike) Hall, Mary (Gregg) Howard, Judy (Dan) Connell, and Patty (Neil) Madsen; dear son of the late Edward and Helen Rickelman; brother of the late Bob Rickelman; cherished grandfather of 15 and great-grandfather of 29.
Bernie was a U.S. Navy World War II Veteran, serving from 1944 to 1946. He served in the South Pacific and the Invasion of Okinawa. He attended Kent State University and received a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Education. He was a member of the KSU football and track teams, and a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Starting as a teacher and coach at Atwater, Ohio, then Madison, Ohio, Cleveland Lincoln High, Chanel High School in Bedford, Ohio to West Geauga High School in Chesterland, Ohio. He achieved all levels of success from teacher and coach to principal, then superintendent of W.G. School Systems.
In his free time he enjoyed traveling, especially to watch the grandchildren play sports. He loved his winters spent on Marco Island in Florida. He was an avid golfer and loved his many years playing at Walden of Aurora. He was a proud member of American Legion Post #803 in Aurora.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 342 S. Chillicothe Rd., Aurora, OH 44202 where friends will be received from 10-11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the church. Arrangements by Johnson-Romito Funeral Home, Twinsburg, OH.
