Twinsburg - Robert Leo McDermott, age 80 of Twinsburg, OH passed away Saturday, February 20, 2021. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John and Catherine (nee Davies) McDermott. He is survived by his beloved wife Jacqueline (nee Varuolo) and sister Patricia (Ralph) Schibler; devoted father of Robert (Sonya nee Kurtay-Samonte), Randall (Katherine nee Hendricks), and Richard (Sharon nee Cefaratti); cherished grandfather of Chris, David, Jack, Charlie, and Sam.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Bob graduated in 1958 from Turtle Creek High School. Soon after graduation he began his professional career as an owner/operator of a (Standard Oil) service station and eventually moved on to a long and successful career in materials management. A passionate believer in higher education, Bob earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Management from Hiram College in 1995 while attending night and weekend classes. Bob retired in 2007 from the Taylor Winfield Company in Brookfield, OH.
Bob had a relentless passion and desire to serve the communities in which he lived. Over the years Bob served as a volunteer firefighter and paramedic for the community of Unity, PA. He also served as a member of the Jaycees, advisor for the Boy Scout Explorers, and coach for many of his sons' sports teams over the years.
In 2003, Bob was elected to the Twinsburg City Council as Ward 2 representative thus earning him the nickname 'The Senator' during a casual game of cards with his sons and neighbors. During his 12 years on council, he fought hard to bring financial responsibility to the City of Twinsburg and championed legislation to help reduce City spending to the benefit of all Twinsburg residents. His pragmatic approach to problems combined with a unique sense of humor helped form a special bond with city employees, members of council, and the residents of Ward 2. He was grateful of the many friendships formed over the years.
Services for Bob will be announced at a later date. Please check www.hinefh.com for service information updates. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made in Bob's name to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-501
