Robert William Furlong passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 10, 2020. Beloved husband of Helen M. Furlong (nee Gyure) (deceased). Loving father of Michael (Lisa), Mary Furlong-Ferguson (Rande), Margaret Kirkpatrick (Sam), Robert J. and Marielena Santoli (Mark). Grandfather of Phillip (Alex), David (deceased), Matthew, Teresa Kirkpatrick, Steven Kirkpatrick (Maria), Ryan Kirkpatrick, Shannon, Robert and Marcus Santoli (Khala). Great-grandfather of six and Great-great-grandfather of one and a dear friend to many.
Bob was the co-founder and past President of Furlong & Co. Insurance, the agency he helped start with his brother, where he remained until his retirement in 2018. During his lifetime, he was involved in many different organizations, which included politics. He was the Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Windermere Council 2726 and remained involved with the Council until recently. Bob was both a baseball Coach and a Recreation League Umpire for many years. Taking an interest in his community, Bob was appointed to the Board of Zoning Appeals in Bedford Heights, to where he moved his family in 1959. He was elected to City Counsel in 1969 and served until 1982. During that time, he served as their Council President for 8 years. Speaking of community service, every Thanksgiving from 1964 to 1997, Bob, along with his friends Bill Keslar and Joe Mihalich, sat down to map out their strategy to visit as many homes as they could across the city dressed as Santa Claus. Those who grew up in the City during that time period will, no doubt, have been visited by one or the other and probably have photos to show. He will be dearly missed.
