John Phillips Stout


DELAWARE - John Phillips Stout, 93, passed away, Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Willow Brook Christian Community.

John was born in 1926 in Ostrander, OH to Glenn and Bess (Phillips) Stout. He was baptized, then brought up in the Ostrander Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir and married his wife, Nancy. He graduated from Ostrander High School in 1944 and, after a short stint in the Navy, went to work for Marion Reserve Power and Light, which became Ohio Edison. He worked 42 years there, retiring in 1986. Over the course of his time at Ohio Edison, John worked his way up from an entry level position, to Supervisor of Credits and Collections for the greater Akron area.

While in the Akron area, John lived in Cuyahoga Falls and Stow and belonged to Bethany United Church of Christ, where he sang in the choir and served both as a deacon and an elder. He also sang for 8 years in the Akron Symphony Chorus. John helped start a Boy Scout troop for boys in special education, became their troop leader, and used one week of vacation each summer to be with his troop at Boy Scout camp. In 1990, John and Nancy moved back to Delaware, where they celebrated their so" wedding anniversary in 1997. They worshipped at both the Ostrander Presbyterian Church and the Delaware Presbyterian Church. He was active in several senior citizen groups, including the Ostrander and Delaware Seniors, the Delaware Presbyterian Church "Presbies", as well the Marion Ohio Edison Retirees. He belonged to the Ostrander and Delaware Masonic Lodges, the Elks, and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Fugitt Stout, and two brothers, Glenn and Joe Stout. He is survived by three sons: John David (Deborah), Roger (Mary), and James (Denise); four grandchildren: Seth, Charlotte, Sarah, and Jason (Carina); and two great-grandchildren: Ava and Liam, as well as two sisters, Nancy Jewett, Linda Montey, and a brother, Donald (Donna) Stout. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 pm to 7 pm on Friday, August 2, 2019 in the Terrace Room at Willow Brook Christian Village, 100 Willow Brook Way S, Delaware, OH. A Memorial Service will follow, officiated by his niece, Rev. Patricia Stout. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a contribution to the Ostrander Presbyterian Church. The Delaware Presbyterian Church. or to Willow Brook Christian Village.
