AURORA – At a brief meeting held remotely June 22, City Council added the water capital fund as an additional source from which to take funds for the East Pioneer Trail waterline replacement and repaving project.
Members then decreased appropriations in the water fund by $1.76 million and placed that amount in the water capital fund to pay a portion of the $2.54 million total project cost to CATTS Construction.
The remaining money will come from the road and bridge and capital improvements funds, plus about $1.12 million from Ohio Public Works Commission grants and loans.
After the new waterline, which replaces a 1920s-era line, is completed, most of East Pioneer Trail will be repaved and sidewalks will be installed between Willard and New Hudson roads.
CATTS Construction will be busy in the city this summer. Earlier in June, Council awarded a $266,679 contract to the firm for improvements at the Routes 82-306 intersection, which involves creating northbound left-turn and through lanes on Route 306.
The only other measure approved by council was confirmation of the mayor’s reappointment of Marge Bjerregaard as a member of the Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority for a term from June 30, 2020 to June 30, 2023.
Four ordinances went on to their next reading, and will be considered at council’s July 20 meeting at 7 p.m. There will be only one regular meeting in July and August, as is usually the case in those summer months.
The public will have an opportunity to provide input on the city’s 2021 tax budget at a public hearing July 20, when the tax budget will be on its third reading.
According to Finance Director Tim Clymer, the tax budget is not an operating proposal, but a tool used by the Portage County Budget Commission to determine the amount of funding a local government receives from property taxes and local government funding.
The city expects to receive $16.74 million in local taxes in 2021, with $14.76 million expected to come from municipal income tax, $1.57 million from general property tax and $410,000 from other local taxes.
Three other ordinances going on to their next reading deal with housing developments – final plats for Renaissance Park at Geauga Lake in the mixed-use zoning district and Hawthorn of Aurora Phase 6 in a planned development district, and a revised development plan for Hawthorn of Aurora.
