NORTHFIELD CENTER — Township residents are invited to comment on a potential resolution to levy an additional $5 permission motor vehicle license fee during public hearings June 15 and 22 at 5 p.m. Both sessions will take place remotely via WebEx.
Residents not able to participate in either public hearing are encouraged to submit comments in writing by mail, email at email@example.com or fax at 330-650-0815 by 4 p.m. June 19.
Townships have the option of enacting several $5 permissive motor vehicle license fees under Ohio Revised Code section 4504.18, and Northfield Center residents currently pay $20 per registration per year, which brings about $40,000 into the township’s coffers.
House Bill 62 created the ability for townships to increase the permissive tax by $5 (ORC section 4804.181). The ORC sections are not contingent on any other levy, so a township can pass a resolution at any time to enact these sections.
The vehicle registration permissive tax is optional and can be levied by counties, municipalities and/or townships. Twelve different $5 levies are available for enactment, but only seven (up to a total of $35) can be in effect at any one time in any single taxing district.
Permissive tax revenue is used by the taxing districts for planning, constructing, improving, maintaining and repairing public roads and for maintaining and repairing bridges.
According to Township Administrator Steve Wright, enactment of the additional $5 fee would put about $11,000 more into the township’s coffers, or a total of about $51,000 per year.
The taxing district first must pass a resolution/ordinance, which is sent to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ tax distribution section by July 1 to be effective the following registration year. So if Northfield Center trustees decide to increase the fee, residents would pay the new amount when they renew their registrations in 2021.

In other township news, officials have provided some information for residents who wish to have yard sales during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Summit County Department of Health has determined residents must follow social distancing and/or mask wearing rules, and they must display a sign that indicates only up to 10 people are allowed to be present at any given time.
Residents must contact the township office at 330-467-7646 to let the staff know of their intentions to have a yard sale and provide the following information: Homeowner’s name, address, email or phone and the dates of the sale.
Signs for the sale are not permitted within road rights-of-way. If the signs are placed in a right-of-way, they will be removed by the township.
Meanwhile, township facilities will remain closed to the public at least through the end of June.
