At the March 11 Anniversary Dinner President Melinda Dull recognized the 44 years of service that Linda Aiello has provided to the Falls Cancer Club.
Aiello was presented with a beautiful bouquet of long stemmed roses and a standing ovation from the attendees.
Her extensive tenure with the Falls Cancer Club started in 1976 after her father-in-law had been diagnosed with cancer and had been referred to the Falls Cancer Club for assistance. She joined the club as her way of thanking and giving back to an organization that had helped her father-in-law with oxygen and prescriptions. She saw how the Falls Cancer Club was such a help to so many and has continued to be an active volunteer and supporter.
Aiello held the club presidency in 1998 and again in 2015 and has also held the vice president and recording secretary positions on the board. She either chaired or co-chaired the Oktoberfest committee for 25 years, and chaired the card party fundraiser for a total of 31 years. She’s chaired or co-chaired other fund raisers such as suppers, luncheons, and the yearly rummage sale that the Falls Cancer Club used to host at the First Christian Church.
She has also been a visitor for countless cancer patients; helping them not only as their liaison with the Falls Cancer Club, but assisting them in finding other resources and organizations that could help them with things not covered by the Falls Cancer Club.
Aiello commented that "The best things are when we get a letter from a patient thanking us for being there and helping. The very best thing is ... over the years we have more and more people surviving cancer. When I first joined most breast cancer and lung cancer patients did not survive possibly a year or less. The survival rate today is so much greater.
"My greatest hope for the future is that a single cure for all cancer would be found and we would no longer be needed," she concluded.
