Coronavirus illnesses continued to climb across Ohio on Saturday as total cases surpassed the 10,000 threshold with 451 deaths.

An additional 1,081 Ohioans had tested positive as of 2 p.m. Saturday, and the state also added 34 probable cases. That brings the number of confirmed and probable cases to 10,222, an increase of 12% from Friday.

Most of Saturday’s increase can be attributed to Marion County, which is home to a state prison fighting an outbreak of COVID-19. The county about 40 miles north of Columbus saw a surge of about 555 cases, a 130% increase.

With three new deaths reported, Summit County now has 21 fatalities and 341 cases, an increase of 18 from Friday. At least 10 deaths involved long-term care patients as of Thursday. The state report, which often lags slightly, is reporting 20 deaths for Summit.

Summit County Public Health also reports 93 people are hospitalized for COVID-19, while 95 health care workers have COVID-19.

Portage County still leads the area with 24 deaths, with at least 17 involving long-term care facilities. Portage has 168 cases and 47 hospitalizations.

Stark County reported one new death and now has 23 total from 221 cases, while Wayne also reported a new death and now has 12. Medina County remained at 10 deaths.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the Marion Correctional Institution harder than any other prison in Ohio. In Marion, 365 inmates and 99 employees had tested positive as of Friday, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. The department did not post updated prison numbers Saturday.

As of Saturday, 2,519 Ohioans had been hospitalized, including 760 who were admitted to intensive care units, according to the state.

Gov. Mike DeWine decided to forgo his daily news conferences this weekend, one of just a few times he’s done so since the coronavirus crisis began. There also were no briefings last Easter weekend.
