SILVER LAKE — Phone calls that residents may receive to sign up for the village’s natural gas aggregation program are a "scam," according to the municipality’s leader.
"You would never receive a phone call from anyone at Village Hall regarding natural gas rates," stated Mayor Bernie Hovey in a post on the village’s Facebook page Thursday. "Hang up immediately; give out no information."
Hovey made this announcement after he said a Silver Lake resident reported receiving a phone call offering a chance to sign up for the village’s gas aggregation program. The caller ID listed the caller as "Bernard Hovey," and the mayor’s home phone number.
"This is a scam," stated Hovey.
The village will not contact anyone by phone to sign up for the gas program, said Hovey. Residents who are already in the program will be contacted by mail to either continue with or opt out of the service.
