TWINSBURG — Numerous school activities, such as the show choir benefit concert, the high school's play, and winter sports award banquet have been cancelled.

In a letter sent to parents March 11, Superintendent Kathryn Powers said that all district and school evening events have been canceled through April 4 due to concerns with COVID-19.

"During the last two days, Gov. Mike DeWine issued press releases which recommend that large, indoor gatherings in Ohio be cancelled or postponed in efforts to protect public health," Powers stated. "It is anticipated that Governor DeWine will soon issue an order that would mandate the cancellation of these types of events. School officials have spent the day today determining evening and weekend events that should be cancelled in efforts to support the governor?s anticipated action."

Canceled events include:

• March 13 and 14, Twinsburg High School's spring play;

• March 16, Twinsburg High School/RB Chamberlin Middle School's Jazz Night;

• March 19, Wilcox Primary School, Kindergarten Bingo, and Twinsburg High School's Winter Sports Awards Banquet;

• April 2, George G. Dodge Intermediate School's PTA Achievement Night for Grades 4 and 5; and

• April 3 and 4, Twinsburg High School/RB Chamberlin Middle School's Show Choir Benefit Concert.

"I apologize to our staff and students who are impacted by this decision as they have worked hard to prepare for many of these events," Powers said.

For now, after-school athletic practices will continue "so that our Tigers are prepared for the upcoming Spring sports season," Powers said.

"Decisions regarding Spring sports athletic competitions are yet to be determined," she added.

In addition, the Twinsburg Vocal Music Booster parents made the decision to cancel the Great Expectations trip to Disney World where the students were scheduled to compete during the weekend of March 20 through 22, Powers said. Other planned field trips, including the Washington DC Trip, the Greenfield Village Trip, and the Camp Fitch Trip, will be determined later.

Students of the Month and student presentations planned at the March 18 and April 1 school board meetings also are canceled, Powers said.

"Our building principals will plan other school day activities to celebrate our Tigers and their success," Powers said.
