A Twinsburg martial arts instructor pleaded not guilty Friday, Jan. 3 in Summit County Common Pleas Court to charges he allegedly inappropriately touched a young girl who attended the Silent Mind Martial Arts Studio in Twinsburg, where the instructor worked.

The instructor, William Mello, 59, of 9299 Shady Lake Drive in Streetsboro, was arrested Dec. 6, 2019 on a charge filed in Stow Municipal Court. He was released on a 10% of $10,000 bond on Dec. 9. He was indicted Dec. 13 on two counts of gross sexual imposition, each a third-degree felony, in Summit County Common Pleas Court. At his arraignment Friday, the bail set by the lower court was continued. He has been ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim.

His attorney did not immediately return a call for comment.

According to the indictment, Mello had sexual contact with the girl between Aug. 1 and Sept. 14, 2019. The girl was less than 13 years old at the time of the incident, but the indictment does not give her exact age or specify what the conduct was.

Twinsburg police are asking for the public’s help in obtaining additional information in this case. Those who have information should contact Twinsburg Police Detective Greg Kopniske at 330-425-1234.

Mello is scheduled to appear before Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands on Jan. 15.
