A serious injury crash on Interstate 76 westbound near milepost 27 in Tallmadge late Wednesday night has left two people seriously injured.

According to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at about 10:39 p.m., a 2007 Jeep Liberty and a 2014 Hino 268A commercial truck were traveling westbound on Interstate 76. The commercial truck rear-ended the Jeep and went off the left side of the roadway, overturning in the median. Debris from the crash hit a passing 2007 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on Interstate 76.

The driver of the Jeep was Debra J. Wissman, 62, of Massillon. She was taken to Akron City Hospital with serious injuries. The commercial truck driver, Rodrigo Almedia, 38, of Columbus, was also taken to Akron City Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Silverado, John M. Mathews, III, 23, of Hartville, was not injured in the crash.

Alcohol is not expected to have contributed to the crash. Wissman was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The other two drivers were wearing seat belts. Interstate 76 remained open while the police did their initial investigation. 

The crash remains under investigation.
