Steve Wiandt, a reporter for the Cuyahoga Falls News-Press, the Record-Courier and other weekly publications for more than a decade, lost his battle with cancer on Saturday.

Steve began reporting for the Falls News-Press in 2008. When GateHouse Media purchased the Record-Courier and its affiliated newspapers including the Falls News-Press in 2017, Steve began covering business in the Summit County area. Previously he was a reporter for the Alliance Review and The Press-News in Minerva.

He was a graduate of Sandy Valley High School and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He was a resident of Ravenna.

Steve leaves behind his wife, Debbie, a teacher in the Crestwood School District, and his son, Jameson.

"When you work in the same place for a long time, if you’re lucky, your co-workers become an extended family," said GateHouse Media Ohio Reporter Phil Keren, who was Wiandt's editor at the Cuyahoga Falls News-Press for nine years. "That’s how I felt about Steve. We smiled and laughed every day. We would joke with each other and share stories. As another friend said, 'Steve never met a stranger.' So true. People and relationships were always important to him. He could talk with anyone, and make friends wherever he went. I always admired his ability to connect with people. Most of all, I’m going to miss his welcoming smile and that playful laugh."

Calling hours for Steve will take place on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 4-7 p.m. Friday visitation will be at 11 a.m. and the funeral service will start promptly at noon at Ravenna Assembly of God, 6401 S.R. 14, in Ravenna.
