Since Aug. 8 was "Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day," it must mean it’s backyard harvest time and all the hard work of local gardeners — lovely fresh tomatoes, string beans, cucumbers, zinnias, marigolds and more — has paid off.
But for those of us who depend on others for the locally grown gifts of the season, remember, The Church in Aurora Farmers Market, 146 S. Chillicothe Rd., is still open from 4 to 7 pm every Wednesday through Aug. 30.
Classic cars, those lovingly cared-for gems with the shiny exteriors and spotless upholstery that wrap us in warm feelings of days gone by, will take center stage at the Anna Maria Charity Car Show from 10 am to 3 pm Aug. 17 at The Atrium at Anna Maria, 800 N. Aurora Rd.
Special awards for exceptional vehicles will highlight the event with door prizes, 50/50 raffle and plenty of tasty refreshments, thanks to the sponsorship of Liberty Ford of Aurora and Anna Maria.
All proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. For more information call 330-562-7777.
To mark the centennial of the passage of women’s the right to vote, The League of Women Voters will partner with Girl Scouts of NE Ohio, Girls on the Run, and Sigma Delta Theta to celebrate Women’s Equality Day with a major presentation at the Akron Rubberducks game on Aug. 25.
The women and girls will present the colors, sing the National Anthem, parade the bases, throw out the first pitch, and, most importantly, be on hand to register voters, as well.
Tickets, discounted to just $7, including a one dollar donation to the League, are available online at groupmatics.events/s/other/womensequality. The game begins at 2:05 pm and everyone is encouraged to wear white to show support for the suffragists who worked tirelessly so women can cast their ballots.
Get ready for a wet and wild time on the pond at Moebius Nature Center beginning at 2:30 pm Aug. 24. Participants will use nets to scoop, view and return the residents of the center’s pond while observing dragonflies and other wildlife just above the water. Be prepared to get wet and maybe muddy at this free event, but let them know you’re coming by registering on mymnc.org.
Finally, let us not forget some of the other important dates in this final month of summer. Aug. 13 is Left Handers Day; Aug.14 is National Creamsicle Day; Aug. 17 National Thriftshop Day: Aug. 30 is National Marshmallow Day; and my favorite, Aug. 31 is International Bacon Day.
