HUDSON — So far, the construction for the new Hudson Middle School and the expansion at Ellsworth Hill Elementary School is still “on target,” said Phillip Herman, superintendent.

“I wish we could be ahead of schedule,” Herman said at the school board’s June 24 meeting. “But things have been going well, despite all of the rain we’ve had.”

As of last week, he said, the auditorium walls were going up at the new $46 million, 181,000-square-foot middle school.

Steel beams are expected to arrive soon, Herman added.

Meanwhile, the 14,700-square-foot expansion at Ellsworth Hill, which broke ground in April, is underway and the improvements at the Ada Cooper Miller Natatorium “are coming along nicely,” Herman said.

Board member James Field said that it was good news that the construction projects were still on schedule.

“This has been a record amount of rain,” Field said.

The bond issue and projects

Funding for the expansion and other improvements throughout the district will come from an $81.5 million, 4.97-mill bond issue approved by voters in November 2017.

Ellsworth Hill, at 7750 Stow Road, will add 11 classrooms for the district’s first and second graders, starting in the 2020-21 school year, according to information from the school district. Currently the building, which opened in August 2007, houses the district’s pre-kindergarten and second grade students.

Once renovations are complete, the district’s pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students will transition to McDowell Elementary; the third through fifth graders will go to East Woods Elementary; and sixth through eighth graders will attend the new Hudson Middle School, which is near the current middle school. Evamere will be downsized and renovated to create centralized administrative offices for the district.

The district already finished its renovations at the high school just before the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, which included utilities upgrades and improvements to the high school’s media center.
