TALLMADGE — An administrative contract for the district’s athletic director was approved but not by an unanimous vote of the board of education at its meeting Wednesday.

With a 3-2 vote, the board approved a one-year contract for Athletic Director Don Seeker, who has been with the district since August 1995. He will be paid $89,949.

Board Vice President Christine Cipa and Board member Chris Tywon voted against the contract.

Tywon said he felt the athletic department needed new leadership.

"Our district needs a change in our athletic director and our athletic department," he said. "I thought with the new facilities, this was now a time for that change. That’s why I voted ‘no.’" 

Cipa could not be reached for comment by press time.

The school board unanimously approved three-year contracts for:

• Courtney Davis, K-5 elementary principal, who first started with the district in August 2010, $94,037;

• Shelley Monachino, director of teaching and learning, who started with the district in August 2004, $100,579;

• Jeff Manion, Tallmadge Middle School principal, who has been with the district since April 2002, $92,402; and

• Kim Hussing, Tallmadge Middle School assistant principal, $81,772. Hussing has been assistant principal since August 2017, said Treasurer Jeff Hostetler. She was a teacher prior to that, had left district to become an administrator elsewhere, and then returned to the Tallmadge schools.

There will be no pay increases for next year, Hostetler said. In April, the school board unanimously voted to approve one-year, rollover contracts for both classified and certified staff members.

The contracts include a base salary freeze, which will save the district about $150,000, said Superintendent Jeff Ferguson in a previous interview.

In addition to certified and classified staff members, district administrators have also agreed to a base salary freeze.

There is no change to the employee percentage of health care contributions, Hostetler said, but since the overall premiums will increase, "so will employee cost."
