Join The Academy Choir and Orchestra April 7 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel for The William T. Appling Memorial Concert Series featuring a performance of Sunrise Mass by Ola Gjeillo.
This stunning new work is a contemporary setting of ancient mass texts. With movements titled The Spheres, Sunrise, The City and Identity, the work is described by Gjeillo as a metaphor for human development from child to adult, or a spiritual journey. The performance will be visually enhanced with photos representing places WRA students live and visit.
The William T. Appling Memorial Concert Series was established in 2009 in honor of Bill Appling, longtime head of the music department.
According to Midge Karam, current WRA Fine and Performing Arts Department faculty member, "Appling instilled a love of choral singing in his students by challenging them to sing masterworks of choral and orchestral literature not often performed in high school. We've continued to perform works by Mozart, Schubert and others with a particular focus on works written by those great composers while they were still in their teens."
This year’s work gives students an opportunity to sing a masterwork written by a living composer. One of choral music’s rising stars, Gjeillo was born in Norway in 1978 and resides in New York City.
The concert is open to the public and will take place in the Knight Fine Arts Center. Learn more about Western Reserve Academy during the spring open house April 27. Register at wra.net/springopenhouse.
